I don’t think enough people in this world truly appreciate great literature for what it is anymore. It’s actually really sad to me. In a world where retarded reality shows, violent video games, and stupid celebrity obsessions rule, I decided to make it my business to pay homage to timeless literature.
Instead of flipping through endless channels of mind-rotting bullshit like the Kardashians or the Hogans or Rock of Love Charm School, this year I will be opening the cover to worlds past, where I might actually learn something.
Here’s a compilation of most of the classics I’d like to read this year. I’m sure time won’t allow me to read everything, but to keep me focused, here they are.
A lot of these I’ve read in high school and college; some I’ve never read at all. Either way, I’m pretty excited to go down the list as time permits.
Please leave your comments or suggestions and tell me if you’ve read any of these, and what you think!
And join me in turning off the TV every once in a while and diving into something intelligent and challenging!
- Anna Karenina by Leo Tolstoy
- The Grapes of Wrath by John Steinbeck
- Wuthering Heights by Emily Bronte
- The Picture of Dorian Grey by Oscar Wilde
- The Bell Jar by Sylvia Plath
- Rebecca by Daphne du Maurier
- Utopia by Thomas More
- The Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne
- Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare
- A Midsummer Night’s Dream by William Shakespeare
- Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte
- Ethan Frome by Edith Wharton
- The Tell Tale Heart by Edgar Allan Poe
- Catcher in the Rye by J.D. Salinger
- Odyssey by Homer

I read Wuthering Heights, The Bell Jar and Catcher in the Rye recently and they were odd. Good, but the characters were a little disturbing.
Some of the others you listed I read in high school (or was supposed to read) but I can’t comment on them because the only books I read in high school and actually liked back then were 1984 and Brave New World.
Anna Karenina is HUGE! Good luck with that!
Write reviews on all of them to let us know what you think of them!
Classics to read (or re-read) this year for me are Pride and Prejudice and The Great Gatsby.
Apparently you haven’t stumbled upon Tool School.
I was going to add The Great Gatsby too…and Farewell to Arms. Both good reads.
I started reading 1984 so I’ll let you know how that goes! :)
Do indian romances count??? LOL……on the 4th book of the Twighlight series……
